After getting a comment from Bas and seeing some questions on the Debian mailing list, I want to know your biggest HD used in any type of Mips/i386 style cobalt machines. Please drop me a comment with you configurations – e.g. what machine, how many drives, which drives – and your experience like performance, stability etc.
Did you ever try to add some additional Card like IDE, SATA or USB (or combi cards) in your Cobalt machine? I would like to know if this was successful or not and what about drivers, performance, power consumption and so on.
What is the use of the storage space? Did you use media streaming (upnp, dlna, daap, etc.), file sharing (nfs, smb, etc.), NAS (iscsi) ore something else?
Please drop a comment with your configuration.
Hi,
i currently use a maxtor 160 Gb drive and have a usb2 card in my qube2.
All is ok under debian testing.
Hello,
I’m using a Samsung SpinPoint SV1604N with 160GB in my Qube2. I just set it up last week with Debian, so currently it’s only used as a file server with Samba. Not sure if i can run Anything else on it as it only has 16 MB of RAM and i don’t seem to be able to find more memory for it here in Germany.
I didn’t add an extra PCI-Card yet.
About power consumption in general: shouldnt be too much, as I switched the internal fan for a newer one with temperature dependent speed and made the disk spin down after 2 minutes idle time using “hdparm”. Still gotta measure the power consuption as soon as i get a measuring device.
Hiho,
i use a 60Gig ATA in 2,5″Form Factor as Boot Disc and a
1TB HD Samsung S-ATA for Data in my Qube3 with Debian. 2.6.24.x
best regards
Christian
Hi,
I have a Qube3 with StrongBolt and 2 x 500Gb Sata drives with a PCI Sata Sil 3112 Card.
I have a 160 GB Samsung SP1645N and a 160 GB Seagate ST3160215A. This set-up suffered from overheating issues so I removed the top metal housing within the blue plastic cover of my Qube2. The disks are mounted vertically, sticking into the central area of the Qube2 from the original single-disk screw-holes. I had to saw a square hole out of the top of the blue cover for the connector ends of the hard disks to stick out a bit, but this helps tremendously with cooling (hot air rises).
I now call it FrankenQube! 🙂
I also added a 1Gbit Intel Pro 1000 GT Network card as the primary interface on my LAN.
The Qube2 runs Debian 5 kernel 2.6.26, performing the tasks of firewalling my homeLAN and the internet, running NFS, Samba, squid proxy (forward and reverse), DynDNS, tinydns (for my own small dns), dhcp, lighttpd to access my MP3s from the outside world and rtorrent as a download service onto the large raid0 array I made out of two big partitions of the 160GB disks together.
Even a fluxbox (CobaltBlue 🙂 ) graphical desktop in 800×600 using tightVNC runs slow but usable on it if I want to use some GUI management sometimes.
NFS sustained throughput is low despite the 1Gbit/sec card but I can get up to 2,5 MBytes/sec through the firewall which is pretty much the linespeed my provider allows.
Apart from slow NFS/CIFS transfer rates off of the internal disks, the occasional unexplained system hangs are my biggest gripe with the set-up.
Using ext3fs (planning to switch to XFS for the torrent dump-space) the fsck’s upon boot-up are very acceptable, it actually wastes most of it’s time on the firestarter start/stop/start-again/stop-once-more/start scripts.
With a Sil 3112 SATA card, I was able to use a 1TB SATA drive in my Qube 2.
I’ve a 500gb drive attached to the internal IDE of my Qube2, runs NetBSD 5.1.
I’ve got a Cobalt RaQ2+ (the + means SCSI IIRC), which I populated the 2nd IDE header on so I could run both drives on their own busses. I’ve got two 250GB drives in a software mirror. Running NetBSD. Still my primary net-facing server.
